  1. Auditory Sensitivities:
  • Use noise-canceling headphones or earplugs to reduce background noise.
  • Create a quiet space or "sensory retreat" where the person can go to escape overwhelming sounds.
  • Play soothing, consistent background noise (e.g., white noise machines, fans) to mask disruptive sounds.
  • Gradually expose the person to different sounds in a controlled manner to build tolerance (desensitization).
  1. Visual Sensitivities:
  • Reduce visual clutter in the environment to minimize distractions.
  • Use soft, natural lighting instead of harsh fluorescent lights; consider dimmable lights.
  • Provide sunglasses or tinted lenses to reduce glare and brightness.
  • Implement visual schedules and clear, simple visual cues to aid in organization and reduce anxiety.
  1. Tactile Sensitivities:
  • Choose clothing with soft, seamless fabrics and remove tags to avoid irritation.
  • Introduce different textures gradually, starting with those the person is more comfortable with.
  • Use weighted blankets or compression garments to provide calming deep pressure.
  • Provide fidget tools or textured objects for the person to touch, which can help desensitize and soothe.
  1. Taste/Oral Sensitivities:
  • Offer foods with mild flavors and smooth textures initially, gradually introducing new tastes and textures.
  • Use oral sensory tools like chewable jewelry or oral motor exercises to help desensitize the mouth.
  • Allow the person to explore food through smell and touch before tasting.
  1. Olfactory Sensitivities:
  • Avoid strong perfumes, scented products, and harsh cleaning chemicals.
  • Introduce pleasant, mild scents in the environment, such as essential oils diffused lightly.
  • Allow the person to carry a scent they find comforting (e.g., a scented handkerchief) to use when needed.
  1. Proprioceptive Sensitivities:
  • Engage in activities that provide deep pressure input, like joint compressions, bear hugs, or weighted vests.
  • Encourage participation in heavy work activities, such as carrying heavy objects, pushing, pulling, or climbing.
  • Use tools like therapy balls, resistance bands, or body socks for proprioceptive feedback.
  1. Vestibular Sensitivities:
  • Provide gentle, rhythmic movements (e.g., rocking in a chair, swinging) to help calm the vestibular system.
  • Gradually introduce activities that challenge balance and spatial orientation, like balance beams or obstacle courses.
  • Use activities that involve slow, controlled movements rather than fast or unpredictable motions.

STRATEGIES TO ADDRESS SENSORY ISSUES
  • Use noise-canceling headphones or earplugs to reduce background noise.
  • Create a quiet space or "sensory retreat" where the person can go to escape overwhelming sounds.
  • Play soothing, consistent background noise (e.g., white noise machines, fans) to mask disruptive sounds.
  • Gradually expose the person to different sounds in a controlled manner to build tolerance (desensitization).

  • Offer foods with mild flavors and smooth textures initially, gradually introducing new tastes and textures.
  • Use oral sensory tools like chewable jewelry or oral motor exercises to help desensitize the mouth.
  • Allow the person to explore food through smell and touch before tasting.
